To Be Seen

The Classic arrives the same week every June and the town agrees, briefly, to be a photograph. Rosé before noon. Linen that has never seen labor. The tents go up on the same grass where the snow was, and everyone dressed for the moment instead of the place.

We do not begrudge it. A place that is seen is a place that is remembered, and we are in the business of remembering. But there is a difference between being seen and being known, and the archive only keeps the second kind.
